A RIVER of sewage is leaking into an aquifer supplying water to towns in the province of Malaga.

Dirty water is flowing into the underground water supply, which caters for the towns of Alhaurín de la Torre, Alora and Pizarra, all inland from the regional capital.

Environmental group, Associacion Ciriana, said a broken wastewater pipe has caused a ‘significant loss of sewage.’

FILTHY: Lagoon of sewage making its way into the drinking water supply

Dirty water is now filtering into the ‘aquifer that supplies drinking water to much of the province.’

The accident occurred in the north of Arraijanal, just south of Malaga city, where the Malaga Academy of football was due to be built.

“The sanitation problem there is quite serious,” said Mari Cruz Torres, from Associacion Ciriana.

She added that the incident has the potential to be an ‘environmental disaster.’

Authorities have confirmed that a sewage pipe has leaked. They say a cleanup operation is underway and the situation has normalised.
