Forest fire erupts in Marbella: Helicopters and planes dump water on inferno as videos show smoke billowing into the air and blacking out roads

A FOREST fire has erupted in Marbella following a day of high temperatures and blustery conditions.

Around 100 firefighters and 14 aircraft have been roped in to tackle the blaze in the hills of Nagueles.

The inferno was declared by Andalucia’s firefighting service INFOCA at 5.15pm on Monday.

In an update on X at 7.10pm, the group said around 100 firefighters were working to extinguish the fire, including 14 aircraft.

Pictures taken from a helicopter show flames snaking through the hills behind Marbella on the Costa del Sol.

Residents in nearby San Pedro de Alcantara can see thick black smoke filling the air while helicopters pass overhead.

Videos shared online show smoke billowing into the sky while nearby roads are practically blacked out as cars race to get away from the epicentre.

Temperatures in the area reached around 30C today, with parts of Malaga having been on a yellow alert for heat this morning.

Meanwhile, there have been moderate winds throughout the day which are likely to have helped the flames spread.

It comes before an ‘Iberian oven’ heatwave is set to arrive to Spain tomorrow, although it is expected to affect more inland areas.
