ARGENTINE football superstar Lionel Messi has bought Spanish fifth-tier side UE Cornella.

The club’s stadium is located just five miles from the Nou Camp where Messi made his name playing for FC Barcelona.

Cornella are currently fighting for promotion to Spain’s fourth tier, the Segunda Federacion, after suffering relegation last season.

A UE Cornella statement said: “Leo Messi’s arrival marks the beginning of a new chapter in the club’s history, aimed at driving both sporting and institutional growth, strengthening its foundations, and continuing to invest in talent.”

“This move reinforces Messi’s close ties to Barcelona and his commitment to the development of sport and local talent in Catalunya — a connection rooted in his years at FC Barcelona and sustained ever since,” the statement continued.

“The project is guided by a long-term vision and a strategic plan that combines ambition, sustainability, and a strong connection to its local roots.”

Cornella were founded in 1951 and have produced several notable players in their 75-year history, including Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya and former Spain international Jordi Alba, who was Messi’s teammate at Barcelona and Inter Miami.

The club caused a major upset in the 2021 Copa del Rey, beating Atletico Madrid, before being narrowly eliminated by Barcelona in the subsequent round after extra time.

Messi remains Barcelona’s record goalscorer, having netted 672 goals in 778 appearances, securing 10 LaLiga titles and four Champions League trophies during his time at the Camp Nou.

His former Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who plays for Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, bought a 25% stake in Spanish side Almeria in February.
