Mini heatwave ends on Costa Blanca with yellow alert for storms and winds

THE recent spell of sunshine and unseasonably high temperatures for Alicante province has ended with a yellow alert issued for southern parts of the area by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

Strong winds, storms, and drop in temperatures are forecast for Friday with an ‘unstable’ weekend predicted.

The change is down to the creation of a low pressure belt in the Alboran Sea that is moving to the region.

The weather front has been created by an anticyclone based in the North Sea between the British Isles and Scandinavia which is forcing storms and low pressure to appear much further south- including Sapin.

Aemet says that Friday and Saturday will be the most unstable with temperatures in Alicante City falling from 25C on Thursday to around 20C on Saturday.

The provincial capital has a 70% chance of rain during Friday afternoon- rising to 80% on Saturday.

In the south, the Vega Baja region has a 75% probability of storms with temperatures dropping by around five degrees.

FRIDAY RAINFALL PREDICTION(Aemet)

Wind gusts on the southern Costa Blanca coast could reach up to 60km/h with waves of between two and three metres.

In the northern Marina Alta area, the Friday rain probability is 95% accompanied by strong northerly wind gusts and at best, temperatures reaching 21C.
