In mid-February, a woman was taken to the intensive care unit of a hospital in Badalona with injuries consistent with sexual assault and multiple broken bones, leaving her in a critical, life-threatening condition.
Police discovered that the victim met the alleged perpetrator, through a dating app.
The man had several fake profiles which he used to contact women and select potential victims.
According to police, he built a relationship with the victim, gained her trust, and then began a pattern of abusive behaviour.
Authorities say he isolated her from her family, extorted money from her, and that the abuse culminated in the sexual and physical assault.
The 30-year-old man has been charged with similar crimes in the US.
He was brought before a Catalan judge, charged with attempted murder, extortion and sexual assault, and remains in custody.
