BRITISH holidaymakers longing for home comforts while abroad are in for a treat after popular food chain Greggs announced Spain as the destination for its first bakery outside the UK in almost 20 years.
Travellers passing through Tenerife South Airport will soon be able to tuck into a succulent sausage roll or piping-hot steak bake while waiting for their flight, bosses said.
It will mark the Newcastle-based fast food company’s first foreign branch since a store closed down in Belgium in 2008.
The new opening will be housed in the departures side of the airport, which served almost 14 million passengers in 2025 – around half of whom are believed to be Brits.

However, an official opening date is yet to be announced.
The menu is expected to blend classic hot bakes with local bites, meaning customers could settle for a traditional sausage roll snack, or test their luck with a brand-new Spanish omelette roll.
Greggs chief executive Roisin Currie said: “Tenerife South Airport is a hub for millions of UK and international passengers each year, making it the ideal location to test spreading our wings in an overseas setting.
“It’s an exciting milestone for Greggs as we bring a slice of home to the Canaries, and we’re confident our great-value offering will resonate just as well under the Spanish sun as it does on the UK high street.”
Chief executive of Lagardere Travel Retail Spain and Portugal, Javier Cagigal, said: “We’re delighted to partner with Greggs to bring such a well-loved brand into Tenerife South Airport for the very first time.

“As passengers head home, this new opening gives them a familiar, comforting choice in departures – whether that’s a last treat, a relaxed sit-down moment or something to ease the journey home.”
Greggs is far from the first classic British outlet to try their luck in Spain.
Earlier this year, super-cheap pub chain Wetherspoons opened its very first bar outside the UK and Ireland at Alicante Airport.
The new spot is located airside in the area for passengers travelling home on non-Schengen Zone flights, including to the UK.
After a successful opening, plans are already afoot to open two new pubs at Barcelona El-Prat Airport.
The first of the two pubs is set to open at Terminal 1 in September 2026, before the second opens its doors in Terminal 2 in January next year.
