Get ready to sizzle: Spain braces for first major heatwave of the year with highs of 38C

SPAIN is bracing for its first major heatwave of the summer, with temperatures forecast to near 40C in some regions over the coming week as a powerful heat dome sweeps in from Africa.

According to state meteorological agency Aemet, this weekend’s wintry cold snap is set to give way to a sudden surge in temperatures, with much of the country expected to bathe in 30C-plus sunshine.

Aemet spokesperson Ruben del Campo said many parts of Spain could end up between 5C and 10C warmer than usual for this time of the year amid a dramatic change in weather conditions.

Highs of 34C are expected across much of the country, including in the north-east, centre and south of the Iberian peninsula.

The mercury will climb even higher in some regions, especially in Andalucia.

The heat will build up gradually from Monday, with Friday expected to be the hottest day of the spell.

Sevilla is expected, as usual, to be the epicentre of the heat.

Expats and tourists in the Pearl of Andalucia could roast in a scorching 38C by the end of the week.

The temperature could hit 36C in Badajoz, Toledo, Zaragoza and Lleida, 35C in Cordoba and Jaen, 34C in Madrid, plus 33C in Granada, Valladolid and Huelva.

The mercury will linger above 30C in all areas bar the Balearics, Canary Islands, Galicia and Asturias.

Night-time temperatures are also forecast to rise, with minimums set to stay above an uncomfortable 20C across much of the south.

The skies are expected to remain blue with no rain forecast, meaning expats and visitors will be able to soak up the rays all week.
