A VIOLENT attempted squatting in the heart of Barcelona ended in a bizarre twist after riot police discovered that one of the victims was a wanted criminal.
The incident unfolded at around 11.30pm on May 27 in Barcelona’s affluent Eixample neighbourhood.
A group of armed assailants forced their way into a home using violence and intimidation in an attempt to occupy it while the residents were still inside.
A resident of the apartment building alerted Mossos d’Esquadra, Catalunya’s force, who arrived on the scene accompanied by riot police.
All four of the would-be squatters were arrested at the scene while charged with armed robbery and attempted illegal occupation.
In a bizarre twist, one of the victims, an unidentified female, was also arrested when police discovered there was an outstanding warrant for her arrest.
Given the unusual nature of the robbery, riot police remained on the scene following the arrests to monitor the area.
Police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the break-in.
