TWO people have died in Spain as a record-breaking heatwave continues to push temperatures past 40C, with fatalities reported in Andalucia and the Basque Country.
A 90-year-old woman died in a nursing home near Bilbao yesterday after suffering from heatstroke as temperatures surpassed 40C.Â
A red alert remains in place across the Basque Country for the third consecutive day, with officials warning of a danger to life.
A 68-year-old man in Almeria, where temperatures also hit 40C, has also died as a result of the heatwave.
He also experienced heatstroke and was treated at the Torrecardenas Hospital where he died.
Andalucia Minister, Antonio Sanz, confirmed that a further two people in Cadiz and Cordoba required medical attention after suffering heatstroke.
In another spell of hot temperatures, between 11 and 14 June, 427 people were treated for heat-related illnesses in A&Es across Andalucia.
It comes as Spain is enduring a record-breaking heatwave.
Cantabria has set a new temperature record after temperatures hit 43.7C yesterday, exceeding the previous high of 43.5C and the June record of 41C set in 2022.
Records were also smashed in Almeria where throughout the night of June 21, temperatures failed to drop below 30.8C – a staggering 3.7C higher than the previous June nighttime record.
This marked the first time a minimum temperature of 30C or higher has been recorded in June on the Iberian Peninsula since records began in 1950.
Cordoba and Jaen are expected to see the worst of the heat today, with highs forecast to reach 44.2C and 43.5C respectively.
