SPAIN has shattered June heat records after Almeria endured a historic 30.8°C night, with Palma de Mallorca port also surpassing previous nighttime highs.
The first major heatwave of the summer has hit Spain, bringing sweltering overnight temperatures and a string of record-breaking June highs across the country.
Throughout the night of June 21, temperatures in Almeria failed to drop below 30.8C – a staggering 3.7C higher than the previous June nighttime record.
This marked the first time a minimum temperature of 30C or higher has been recorded in June on the Iberian Peninsula since records began in 1950.
Almeria has now endured three consecutive nights above 30C, with temperatures dipping to just 30.3C in the city last night and a sweltering 31.5C in the coastal town of Cabo de Gata.
Records were also broken in Palma de Mallorca, where on the night of June 21 temperatures did not drop below 25.7C, beating the previous June record by one-tenth of a degree.
It comes as a sweltering heatwave is baking much of western Europe and sending temperatures soaring in Spain.
On Monday 22, 101 weather stations in the AEMET network, which consists of 828, reached or exceeded 40C.

In Jaen, temperatures exceeded 45C while in the northeastern town of Lleida, temperatures topped 42C.
AEMET expects that these ‘extremely high’ temperatures will last until Wednesday.
Red ‘danger to life’ warnings for heat have been issued in Andalucia’s Cordoba and Jaen as well as the northern areas of Gipuzkoa, Bizkaia y Cantabria.
