THIS is the alarming moments after a man with a psychiatric disorder stabbed his mother at their Sitges home and then dived into the sea to evade arrest.

The emergency call came in at 9.19am, with the attacker fleeing the property and heading armed toward the central Platja de Sant Sebastia.

Police fired their tasers in an attempt to bring him down, but he managed to reach the water and dive in.

He swam approximately 900 metres along the seafront toward Passeig La Ribera, behaving aggressively toward officers tracking him from the shore.

Police cordoned off both Platja de Sant Sebastia and the adjacent Platja de La Fragata, ordering all bathers to leave the water.

Maritime rescue teams threw him a lifebuoy and eventually brought him to land, where he was arrested and transferred to hospital.

His mother was taken to Hospital Sant Camil in Sant Pere de Ribes, where she is being treated for stab wounds. Her life is not in danger.

Mossos d’Esquadra said the man is known to have a psychiatric disorder and is believed to have suffered a ‘psychotic episode’ before the attack.

Firefighters and Salvament Maritim units attended alongside multiple Mossos patrols.

Sitges, one of Barcelona province’s most popular beach resorts, was at peak summer capacity when police ordered visitors out of the water.
