The accident happened at around 11pm when the national Moroccan flag that the victim had draped around her neck got caught in the rear wheel of the motorcycle that she was riding with her husband.

The woman sustained severe injuries which led to her heart stopping.

Algeciras Policia Local officers went to the scene and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation using a defibrillator, while they waited for a medical team.

She was taken to the city’s Punta Europa University Hospital, but subsequently died.

Authorities confirmed that the victim’s husband, who was riding the motorcycle, tested negative for alcohol.

The night saw widespread celebrations among the 10,000-strong Moroccan community in Algeciras following their side’s World Cup win streets filled with people, cars, and national flags.

Mayor Jose Ignacio Landaluce called for residents to take care during such celebrations stating that they ‘must always take place with the maximum guarantees of safety’ and that ‘no celebration deserves to end up becoming a tragedy like the one we now regret’.
