A COSTA del Sol town has installed new speed cameras in a bid to make its roads safer, authorities have announced.
The council of Fuengirola, west of Malaga, said on Wednesday it had installed three new speed cameras across the town, alongside eight ‘educational’ radars that do not issue fines.
The move follows efforts to improve road safety earlier this year, with measures including raised pedestrian crossings, more frequent police checks, and improved road signage.
Councillor for Mobility Isabel Gonzalez said: “We are continuing to introduce traffic-calming measures to make Fuengirola a safer, more sustainable and smarter city.”
She added: “Road safety is a priority for this local government, which is why we are continuing to expand both our technical resources and our staff capacity in order to meet changing needs.”
The three new speed cameras were placed on Avenida Ramon y Cajal, at the junction with Calle San Jose; on Avenida de Las Gaviotas; and on the Paseo Maritimo, at the corner of Calle General Rodrigo.
All of these locations regularly experience heavy traffic, Gonzalez explained.
The new cameras add to the three already operating in the city, meaning that Fuengirola has doubled the number of its permanent speed-control points.
Separately, the council said the ‘educational’ radars would be mobile, meaning they will remain in the same spot for a few weeks before being moved to another area of the town.
The displays are designed to show drivers how fast they are travelling in order to encourage compliance with speed limits, and they cannot result in fines.
One of them has already been installed on Avenida de Mijas, where Gonzalez unveiled the programme on Wednesday.
