THE Olive Press spoke to dozens of mostly youngsters across Spain asking whether they would welcome the UK rejoining the EU. Most of those interviewed said yes.
Among the people interviewed, around three in four (37 people) said they would like the UK to rejoin the EU.
Contacted through our personal and professional networks most of those interviewed (69%) were aged 18 to 30, so the sample was heavily weighted towards younger adults.
Among this younger group, 24 out of 34 said they would like the UK to rejoin the EU. 10 out of 34 said they would not.
Among the younger supporters, the most common reason was that it would make travelling to Britain easier.
Many also said Brexit had created unnecessary bureaucracy and paperwork, and believed EU membership would remove the need for visas and other travel documentation.
Others highlighted the greater opportunities it would offer to study and work in the UK.
Among younger respondents who opposed the UK rejoining the European Union, some simply said they did not want Britain to return, while others argued that the UK should remain outside the bloc.
Among older respondents, support for the UK rejoining the European Union was particularly strong.
All six people interviewed in the 50 – 65 age group said they would welcome the UK’s return, with many linking their views to the importance of a stronger European project.
Their responses focused less on everyday travel issues and more on broader political and economic considerations, including European unity, cooperation and shared values.
Older respondents also highlighted the practical benefits of closer ties between the UK and the EU.
The only respondent aged over 65 opposed the idea, arguing that Britain had historically created obstacles to European integration and would be better as a close neighbour rather than a member.
While we received replies from all around the country, over half were in Andalucia and a quarter in Madrid.
The findings reflect the views of the people interviewed and should not necessarily be considered representative of the entire Spanish population as a whole.
