A DRUG ring has been busted in Andalucia for utilizing tourist flat apartment key lockboxes to exchange illegal substances.
Spain’s Policia Nacional have uncovered a new method of drug distribution: hiding marijuana in lockboxes of tourist apartments.
According to a statement from Monday, police uncovered six lockboxes in Malaga that had all been used for illegal purposes.
The supposed method of drug dealing worked by a person first ordering drugs through a mobile app.
Then the dealer in charge of distribution would place the marijuana in the box, which is typically protected by a lock and passkey.
A combination for the lock and the box’s location would then be sent to the buyer, who would then leave the required payment within the box for the dealer to pick up later.
So far, one 25-year-old man has been arrested in relation to the lockbox drug exchanges.
A police investigation began after local residents saw ‘suspicious activity’ involving the use of lockboxes that are usually meant for rental apartments.
Given that the area has a constant flow of people temporarily staying in the neighbourhood, the lockboxes worked to conceal and distribute cannabis by getting placed along other boxes that were functioning as intended.
During the investigation period, authorities spotted the suspect putting a heat-sealed plastic bag in one of the boxes before walking away.
Not long after, another person appeared and deposited 30 cash inside the lockbox.
The suspect has been taken in and turned over to judicial authorities.
