ONE person has died and three others have been wounded after a shooting broke out between two rival clans of Roma gypsy origin on the streets of Valencia.
Four men from the same family have been arrested after the incident, which took place in the early hours of the morning in the L’Alquerieta neighbourhood.
According to initial witness accounts, the violence began with an argument between two young female cousins, which escalated to their fathers and then drew in wider family members on both sides.
A 56-year-old man attempted to intervene and mediate but was unable to stop the confrontation from spilling onto the street, where around a dozen people became involved in a brawl that turned into a gunfight.
The victim – who belonged to the rival family of those arrested – was shot multiple times, including once in the heart, and died around two hours after arriving at the Hospital Universitario de La Ribera.
His body has since been transferred to the Valencia Institute of Legal Medicine for autopsy.
Three others were also shot during the incident.
One required surgery but is not in danger, while the other two have already been discharged from hospital.
One of the four men arrested was himself wounded in the shooting and remains hospitalised.
Emergency services received the first calls at around 4:15am reporting a street brawl and death threats.
Shots were heard shortly afterwards.
The Homicide Group and forensic officers from the Policia Nacional have taken charge of the investigation.
