BOISTEROUS hen and stag dos could soon be hit with fines of up to €1,500 for causing a nuisance on Valencia’s streets under a proposed law being drafted by the city council.

The proposal would make Valencia the first Spanish municipality to explicitly target hen and stag parties with a specific regulation.

Gatherings for private celebrations – including birthdays, hen and stag dos – would be classed as a serious offence if they take place on public streets between 10pm and 8am from Sunday to Friday, with the cut-off extended on Saturdays and the eve of public holidays to 9.30am.

Anyone caught breaking the rules could be fined between €750 and €1,500, unless the event has been officially authorised by the council.

The law would also target some of the more suggestive traditions associated with stag and hen parties.

Wearing clothing or accessories representing human genitalia, or carrying inflatable dolls and other sexual props through public spaces, would be classed as a minor offence carrying a fine of up to €750.

The highest fines, of between €1,500 and €3,000, would be reserved for very serious offences, such as refusing to cooperate with the council or demonstrating behaviour considered disrespectful.

That would include insults, mockery or deliberate harassment towards vulnerable people such as elderly residents, children and people with disabilities.

Fines could be upped if the behaviour is carried out by groups or involves filming victims.

The draft legislation also proposes fines of up to €1,500 for drinking alcohol on the street, with the penalty potentially doubled if the offence takes place in or immediately next to a protected building.

Vandalism of street furniture, street harassment and begging would also be covered by the new rules.

The law is still at the drafting stage and will have to be reviewed by municipal services before it can be formally adopted.
