MURCIA’S Corvera airport has passed six million passengers since it opened, and a new route to Liverpool is due to start next spring.

The milestone was marked on Monday, when regional tourism chief Juan Francisco Martinez and airport director Carlos Sanmartin greeted passengers off a Ryanair flight from Dublin.

The Region de Murcia International Airport (RMU) opened in January 2019, replacing San Javier as the region’s civilian airport.

Martinez called the six million mark ‘a very significant figure’, saying it had come at ‘an especially positive moment’ for both the airport and regional tourism.

New flights are coming too, as Easyjet will launch twice-weekly flights to Liverpool on March 29, 2027, flying on Mondays and Fridays.

The day after, on March 30, Transavia will start a new route to Amsterdam Schiphol, with three flights a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

The Liverpool route will strengthen links with Murcia’s biggest foreign market.

Between January and August, the region welcomed 298,642 British tourists, up 15.5% on last year and almost a third of all international visitors.

British holidaymakers spent €374.3 million over the period, almost 30% of all foreign tourist spending in the region.

Dutch visitors are the fastest-growing market. Their numbers rose to 69,254 over the same period, and spent €118.7 million, making them Murcia’s third-biggest foreign market.

Airport operator Aena’s figures show the airport handled 709,319 passengers between January and August, more than double the 4.1% growth across their national network.

Of the 706,225 commercial passengers between January and August, almost nine in ten, were on international flights.

The figures come in a record year for foreign tourism in the region. Murcia welcomed 949,861 international visitors in the first eight months of 2026, the highest number on record.

Between them they spent €1.25 billion in the region.
