Her male companion managed to get out of the water with some difficulty.

Emergency services got a call from a witness alerting them that a bather had gone missing, after the duo went into the sea despite an orange storm warning alert being in place.

The Las Provincias newspaper reported him seeing the man and woman taking off their clothes on the beach and go naked into the sea.

When he saw the man return in an exhausted state, the witness dialled 112.

The companion of the deceased woman, a 55-year-old Dutch national had rented a house in the Almarda beach area for the weekend.

The police told Las Provincias that he and the victim were not a couple.

With the woman missing at sea, Valencia’s Maritime Rescue service deployed a helicopter and a fire brigade vessel to find the victim.

Her body washed up at Canet d’en Berenguer beach with the Guardia Civil and Sagunto Policia Local officers attending the scene.

A Guardia team has taken charge of the investigation and the woman’s body was taken for an autopsy at Valencia’s Institute of Legal Medicine.

No further details about the woman have been disclosed.
