Tropical Fruits 11 face legal action if fine is left unpaid

ALMUÑECAR mayor Juan Carlos Benavides could face the threat of an embargo on his finances if a fine of more than three million euros goes unpaid.

Judges in Motril ordered the 11 current and former Almuñecar council members who formed the now defunct Tropical Fruits export company in 1988 to present their assets to the court before mid-December or face a possible block on their finances.

The legal ruling goes back to 2003 when a court in Motril hit the 11 with a 3,476,711 euro fine after their fruit export company had gone bust 12 years earlier with multi-million euro debts.
