Fuente de Piedra gears up for annual flamingo banding

flamingo banding

FUENTE de Piedra’s annual flamingo banding is set to take place this year on August 10.

More than 400 volunteers (mostly bird specialists) are expected to arrive to place tracking bands on 600 flamingo chicks for scientific study.

The banding project was launched 27 years ago and has become an economic asset to the area.

In a record season, 14,000 flamingos were hatched after the lagoon saw an increase of over 3,000 mating pairs.
