Gibraltar and Spain separated in UEFA qualifiers

GIBRALTAR and Spain will not face each other in the UEFA 2016 European Championship qualifiers, the football group has announced.

The decision was made at a meeting in Bilbao, and based on the current ‘sensitivities’ between the two.

UEFA’s executive committee has reviewed the procedure for the draw on February 23 in Nice and the organisation’s general secretary Gianni Infantino has confirmed the two member nations will be kept apart due to the sensitivities involved.

General secretary of UEFA, Gianni Infantino, said: “Gibraltar is a full member and will participate in the draw on February 23, but it will not play against Spain. That was one of the criteria that was decided.”

UEFA also called for a uniform approach to tackling match-fixing across Europe.

Infantino said: “We want concrete and effective policies to fight against match-fixing, preferably consistent and uniform instead of having one sanction in one country and one in another.”

  1. for some reason though i am censored /blacklisted on here and others have BY FAR BEEN MORE OFFENSIVE AND MORE OFTEN heres wishing all at the O.P. a merry christmas and a healthy new year………..

  2. Spain will always be petty and absurd when it comes to Gibraltar. They should have put their money where their mouth is and have stepped out of UEFA as they had threatened if Gibraltar was admitted into the football association after blocking Gib for twelve years, seems they got cold feet in the end. Go little Gibraltar!!
