Pedro Román is wanted in connection with town planning corruption in the Costa del Sol resort

POLICE have detained the former right hand man of Jesús Gil as he disembarked a flight from Zurich, Switzerland.
Pedro Román had fled Spain with his daughter on April 23 after discovering police wanted to question the pair in connection with Operation Malaya, a huge scale crackdown on town planning corruption in Marbella.

Officers from the crack anti-corruption force, Udyco, were waiting for Román – who was the right hand man to the now deceased Marbella mayor, Jesús Gil, between 1991 and 1998 – and his daughter María del Pilar at Málaga airport on May 1 as the pair attempted to re-enter Spain.

Police had issued an international arrest warrant after the pair had absconded from the country on learning they were wanted for alleged fraud.

Román and his daughter spent the night in cells in Málaga before appearing before judges in the Costa del Sol city.

The number of arrests in connection with Operation Malaya now stands at 97.
