AlicanteA GERMAN father has been arrested in southern Spain after for leaving his nine-month-old baby in the back of the car while he went to the supermarket.

The tourist parked outside  a  supermarket in Sant Joan d’Alacant in Alicante, but only took his three-year-old son with him, leaving the baby in the back seat.

Concerned passersby flagged down a Civil Guard patrol car at the beach resort in Alicante.

The officers smashed a window to reach the baby but were unable to wake it up so called an ambulance.

The unnamed 33-year-old father returned from the supermarket to find police surrounding the car and his infant child about to be taken to hospital.

The man was arrested and is now facing a charge of child negligence.

He was reportedly on holiday at a nearby campsite with his wife and three children.

The child was treated at the scene and showed no signs of ill health
