ONLINE influencers are always looking for interesting content that will make its way to your timeline, and if that content happens to be a beautiful, natural phenomenon, well even better.
That’s exactly what tiktoker @mi_mundo_en_fotos discovered on La Duquesa beach in Manilva, a municipality that is located on the edge of Malaga province on the border with neighbouring Cadiz.
In two videos that he shared on the social network, and which have racked up nearly 900,000 views between them, he shows the phenomenon of bioluminescence, which is when living organisms emit light.
A blue glow can be seen in the sea as he runs into the sea, as well as when he runs his hand through the water in the dark of the night, as he comments: “Mother nature never ceases to surprise us.”
The organisms in the Malaga waters are, according to the tiktoker, plankton particles.
“Agitation, such as ocean waves or hand movements, triggers this reaction and causes the plankton to emit light, creating a luminous effect on the sand or water,” he writes in the caption to the second video.
Other bioluminescent organisms include jellyfish, abyssal fish and some squid and octopuses, according to a report in La Opinion de Malaga.
The fluorescent light is created thanks to a light-emitting molecule and an enzyme, and serves as camouflage, mimicry of other animals, and signalling to other members of the same species.
