Heat warning for Spain’s Costa del Sol: Experts activate orange alert as mercury to exceed 40C today

MUCH of Malaga province is on an orange alert for extreme heat today.

According to official weather agency Aemet, temperatures will reach highs of 39C along the coast.

This includes resorts popular with holidaymakers, such as Marbella and Estepona.

Meanwhile, more inland areas such as Coin will see the mercury surpass 40C.

Friday marks the third successive day of extremely high temperatures but there will finally be some respite this weekend.

On both Saturday and Sunday, there are currently zero warnings in place for severe heat in the entirety of Malaga province – although temperatures will remain in the 30s.

Previous Aemet guidance for times of extreme heat advises staying out of the sun during the peak hours of the day (11am to 5pm).

People should also avoid drinking alcohol during these hours as it can lead to dehydration.

It goes without saying that residents and tourist should stay hydrated throughout the day to avoid developing heat stroke.
