Spain’s 30C April sizzler to be rained out as storms to bring return of Saharan blood-rain to Andalucia

ANDALUCIA is bracing for an ‘unusual’ week of weather as a scorching April heatwave is set to be washed out by storms and Saharan ‘blood-rain’.

Temperatures across southern Spain are expected to soar between five and 10C above the seasonal average over the coming days.

The extreme weather shift will directly impact popular hotspots along the Costa del Sol and inland Andalucia as the week progresses.

In Sevilla, the mercury is forecast to hit 36C in the shade during the Feria de Abril, while the Guadalquivir valley region will bake in 35C heat.

Saharan ‘blood rain’ is expected to hit Andalucia by the end of the week. Meteored

However, experts from Meteored predict the summer-like conditions will take a violent turn starting on Thursday.

A DANA – an isolated high-altitude depression – is expected to form over the mainland, bringing with it intense storms, lightning and hail.

Crucially, the arrival of the storms will collide with a thick cloud of calima currently moving up from the Canary Islands.

This suspended Saharan dust will mix with the precipitation to create ‘mud-rain’, commonly known as ‘blood-rain’, which is notorious for coating expat terraces, cars and swimming pools across the region.

Friday is expected to be the most unstable day, with heavy downpours and lightning strikes highly likely across Andalucia, particularly in the eastern mountain ranges.

The stormy conditions will also sweep across Extremadura and Castilla y Leon before hitting the Comunidad de Madrid by Saturday.

While expats in the south prepare for both sweltering heat and extreme storms, northern Spain will see much more typical spring weather hovering around 20C.

The incoming DANA effectively marks the official start of the storm season in Spain.
