NETFLIX is preparing to increase its prices in Spain again with the cheapest plan rising to almost €9 a month.
The streaming platform has hiked its prices in Spain for the second time in a year and a half just a month after its US tariffs rose.
Spanish customers have been notified of the price increase and told that they will start being charged the new prices when they are next billed.
All plans have risen by €2 a month meaning that the price of the cheapest plan, which includes adverts, has gone from €6.99 to €8.99.
The standard option with no adverts now costs €14.99 with the premium plan surpassing the €20 mark as it now costs €21.99 each month.
By notifying their customers of the changes in price Netflix in Spain prevents itself from a court case similar to the one seen in Italy.
The Court of Rome ruled Netflix Italy’s price hikes between 2017 and 2024 as unlawful as they were applied without clear consent and proper notice.
As a result of the case that had been brought forward by consumer group Movimento Consumatori, the Italian court ordered the company to refund some of their customers.
This case focused on the notice period rather than the price increase itself and since Italy’s Netflix plans have still risen. They are now displayed on the company’s website.
The price hike in Spain is bad news for Netflix subscription users as they will now be paying €24 annually, no matter whether they have the cheapest or most expensive plan.
