SPAIN’S May bank holiday weekend is set to be affected by thunderstorms and heavy with the worst of the weather expected in the Pais Vasco, Madrid and Valencia.
May will start with a bang for much of northern Spain with thunderstorms, lightning and hail forecast in the Pais Vasco, Galicia and Castilla y Leon on Saturday 2 May.
Thunderstorms and heavy rain are also forecast in the capital, Madrid.
Heavy rain will affect much of the north of the country with an orange weather warning for rain in place in Navarra on Saturday, where up to 30mm of rain is forecast to fall in just an hour.
Meanwhile, yellow warnings for rain are in place in the Pais Vasco and Aragon.
Valencia and the Costa Brava will also experience persistent rain throughout the weekend, putting a dampener on the May festivities.
Thundery conditions will linger in the north on Sunday 2 May while the rain will spread east to Barcelona and the Balearic Islands.
Andalucia is set to escape the worst of the unsettled weather, though much of the region will remain under overcast skies.
Sunshine is expected to be largely confined to Huelva and the Costa de la Luz.
With stormy conditions expected to persist until Monday and millions of motorists set to travel this weekend, authorities are urging travellers to monitor the latest weather warnings closely.
