AFTER an extraordinary four decades at the helm, an expat estate agent has handed over the reins of Mijas Properties to Juliette McCarthy and her son Joe.
But Susanne Teres shouldn’t have too much to worry about, given the new owner worked for her for 15 years of that.
Indeed, Juliette brings a wealth of experience and a deep local knowledge of all property matters in Mijas.
Alongside her son, an experienced PR and marketing executive, the pair now run the centrally-based agency, maintaining its long-standing reputation while introducing a renewed energy and vision.

“We’ve just finished the transition,” Juliette explained to the Olive Press this week.
“It’s very new, but the door is already open – and it’s lovely to be back. People are coming in all the time and saying, ‘great, you’re back’ with smiles on their faces. I really feel at home.”
She continued: “It’s all so natural, very village-like in fact.”
At the heart of the agency, set up in 1984, is a long-term commitment to personal service.

In an industry often driven by volume, Mijas Properties has always taken a different approach, ‘listening carefully to each client and tailoring property searches to their needs’.
Rather than sending endless listings, they focus on selecting the right homes, saving clients time while ensuring a more meaningful experience.
“We believe in really understanding what people are looking for,” continues Juliette, whose son recently returned to Spain after half a decade working in Taiwan.

“It’s not just about the number of bedrooms or the budget – it’s about how they’ll live in the property and what they want from it.”
Between the two of them, they know the village and its property market inside out.
As mother and son, it’s a privilege for them to be able to work together.

“I think we work well together actually,” added Joe, who is working on upgrading the website. “We don’t often have any sort of issues with each other, even outside of work.”
The market itself has ‘recently stabilised’ after a period of rapid growth.
“It went up a lot last year, but winter was a bad period for real estate. It didn’t stop raining, so people weren’t interested in buying or selling”, explains Juliette.

“But now it’s leveling out and we’re seeing more realistic pricing, meaning properties are selling again quickly.”
And as Joe adds proudly: “We have actually sold three properties in just a few days”.
As for buyers the agency has expats ‘from everywhere’. “We have lots of Brits, Dutch and lately a lot of Americans.”
