THESE are eight of Andalucia’s best affordable rural hideaways, according to a leading British travel writer who praised the region’s secluded fincas, mountain retreats and eco-escapes.
In a new travel feature for The Guardian, British travel writer Fiona Dunlop has picked out eight rural escapes for combining affordability, tranquillity and access to some of Andalucia’s most spectacular landscapes.
Stargazing and desert adventures near Almeria
Among the standout recommendations is Casa Mimi, a Belgian-owned B&B tucked away near Gergal in Almeria.
Surrounded by the Sierra de los Filabres mountains, the secluded retreat offers easy access to the wild beaches of Cabo de Gata.

It is also close to the Tabernas Desert and the Calar Alto Observatory, where you can go for a night visit to watch the stars.
With rooms from just €70 a night, Dunlop praised the setting for its homemade Mediterranean dinners and stargazing.
Old-school charm in Las Alpujarras
For travellers craving authentic mountain life, Hostal Pampaneira in the Alpujarras of Granada was highlighted as a budget-friendly gem.
The family-run hotel overlooks the whitewashed village of Pampaneira, high above Orgiva. You can book a room for a mere €42.

It has welcomed hikers and cyclists for almost half a century. Guests can explore routes through the Sierra Nevada or take excursions towards Mulhacen.

Olive groves, gourmet food and eco escapes
Casa Olea, hidden in a valley near Priego de Cordoba, combines stylish accommodation with gourmet dinners with their own olive oil for €36.
The converted farmhouse holds Starlight certification thanks to the region’s clear skies.

Six stylish rooms sit above a restaurant with sweeping views over rivers, olive groves, woodland, two Moorish watchtowers and a Bronze Age hillfort.

For a room, you pay €154, starting with two nights.
Secluded fincas with jaw-dropping views
Reached via a dirt road, the Finca Serrato offers three apartments and two double rooms with terraces overlooking dramatic landscapes.
Nearby attractions include Antequera and El Torcal natural park, famed for its surreal limestone formations.

The property includes a small pool with a far-reaching view, and some rooms/apartments include air conditioning and a private patio.
Prices are as follow: Double rooms from €68, apartments from €77 (two-night minimum), breakfast for €9 and an airport transfer for €60.
Foodie retreat among olive groves in La Subbetica
With just three bedrooms, available for €80 a pop, Finca Las Encinas feels quietly exclusive.
This impression shifts as soon as you step under the pergola overlooking the pool and take in the endless waves of olive groves beyond.
Set in the La Subbetica region between Cordoba and Granada, this guesthouse is a true haven for food lovers.

Welsh chef Clive is passionate about Andalusian cuisine, creating exceptional seasonal dinners and offering hands-on cooking classes.

Luxury glamping in the Sierra Morena

Eco-friendly water mill retreat in the Sierra de Grazalema
Further west, El Molino del Abuelo near Ronda transforms a historic water mill into a colourful eco-retreat surrounded by the Sierra de Grazalema.
The adults-only property, run by two brothers and their mother, blends rustic tranquillity with yoga, cycling and hiking opportunities among Andalucia’s famous pueblos blancos.

It consists of five rooms, two pools and a shared kitchen, with prices per room starting at €70.
Historic mills and hiking havens
Completing the list is Molinos de Fuenteheridos in Sierra de Aracena, Huelva province.
The restored 17th-century flour and olive mill offers spacious rooms, lush gardens and direct access to one of Andalucia’s most underrated hiking regions. The price for a room is €99.

Guests are within easy reach of Aracena’s famous caves, jamon culture and rolling chestnut forests — while Seville remains only a 90-minute drive away.
