SPAIN has approved a major investment around €100 million to move the Balearic Islands’ air traffic control centre from Palma Airport (Mallorca) to Marratxi.

The project, authorised by the Council of Ministers on Tuesday, will see a brand new air traffic control centre built at the grounds of Son Bonet Aerodrome.

The work is expected to take around 32 months and forms part of wider plans to modernise and improve operations at Palma’s Son Sant Joan Airport.

The new complex will include two main sections. One will house the operational control centre and offices, while the other will be used for training, simulation and contingency operations.

Furthermore, the current site will be freed up for the work Aena, the airport operator, is carrying out as part of its renovation and improvement plans.

Sources say the new centre will feature the latest air navigation technology as well as a separate contingency room designed to strengthen security and resilience of the services it provides to all aircrafts.

The government added that construction will take place on a separate plot within Son Bonet Aerodrome ‘without affecting current airport operations’, ensuring ‘a safe and carefully planned transition’.
