Incoming heat dome will bake some Spanish cities in near 40C while still in May: These will be the worst hit areas

Credir: Eltiempo.es

SPAIN is set to swelter under an incoming heat dome this week, with temperatures forecast to soar close to 40C in some cities.

A strong high-pressure system moving over Spain is trapping hot air in a ‘heat dome,’ preventing cooler air from moving in and allowing temperatures to build day after day.

As a result, the final days of May are expected to feel more like a July heatwave across much of Spain, with sweltering conditions affecting large parts of the country.

For much of the week, temperatures are set to hover around 35C in inland Catalunya and Andalucia.

On 26 May, Sevilla is forecast to reach 37C and Cordoba 36C, while in Catalunya, Lleida is expected to hit 35C. Inland Galicia could also see highs of around 36C.

While the Costa del Sol will escape the worst of the heat with temperatures hovering in the late 20s, the Costa Blanca will see maximum temperatures of 34C in Javea and Moraira.

Temperatures are expected to continue climbing, with Thursday and Friday likely to be the hottest days of the week.

During this peak, highs could reach 39C in Badajoz, 38C in Sevilla, and 36C in Bilbao.

Zaragoza and Lleida are also expected to hit a sweltering 38C on Friday.

Night-time conditions will offer little relief, with minimum temperatures staying in the early 20s across much of the country.

As summer arrives early, residents in affected areas are being urged to take extra care to stay cool and well hydrated throughout the week.
