ISRAEL has denied any involvement in the mass storming of Ceuta’s border, warning that Spain’s refusal to cooperate on defence will carry a cost for Spanish citizens.
Speaking at the Nueva Economia forum in Madrid, charge d’affaires Dana Elrich rejected allegations linking Jerusalem and Russia to the influx of migrants into the North African enclave in late July, Spanish news agency EFE reported.
She accused Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s government of spreading ‘disinformation that repeats a lie’ without providing any evidence or official intelligence reports.
“Not working with Israel on our defence also comes with a price for Spanish citizens,” she said.

Elrich said she was surprised that Spanish ministers were pointing fingers at Israel instead of addressing border security in Ceuta during what she described as a national emergency.
She urged Madrid to recognise common security dangers, stressing the urgent need to ‘work together against threats’ such as Iran.
Despite Israel’s strategic alliance with Morocco, Elrich maintained that being an ally of Rabat ‘does not mean we forget other allies’.
“We may be in a critical moment with the central government in Spain right now, but that does not mean Spain as a country is not a partner,” she said.
“We can do more, because we have seen that this government’s decisions sometimes push the security of Spaniards to the side.”
To repair damaged bilateral ties, Elrich demanded a ‘change of political rhetoric’ from Sanchez’s administration, calling for stronger condemnations of terrorism from Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran.
As charge d’affaires, Elrich is currently Israel’s highest-ranking diplomat in Spain following months of escalating diplomatic tension between Madrid and Jerusalem.
Bilateral ties collapsed after Pedro Sanchez moved to recognise the State of Palestine in May 2024, prompting Benjamin Netanyahu to recall his ambassador and leading Spain to downgrade its own mission to match.
Benjamin Netanyahu’s government recalled ambassador Rodica Radian-Gordon in May 2024, leading Spain to dismiss its own ambassador to Israel in March to keep representation at the same level.
