SPAIN’S leading music festival, Primavera Sound, was forced to cancel several major headline performances after severe thunderstorms and heavy rain swept across Barcelona.
The festival, held at Barcelona’s Parc del Forum, was thrown into chaos as heavy downpours and lightning storms battered the site, forcing organisers to cancel headline performances from Massive Attack, Doja Cat and Bad Gyal.
Authorities had issued an orange weather warning for Barcelona ahead of Thursday’s performances, with between 40mm and 60mm of rainfall in just one hour forecast as storms approached the city.
Festival organisers closely monitored conditions throughout the day as thunderstorms, heavy rain and lightning moved across the city.
Although earlier sets from Geese, Cameron Winter and Ravyn Lenae went ahead, at 8.45pm organisers announced that performances by Alex G and Mac DeMarco on the festival’s two main outdoor stages had been cancelled due to the worsening weather conditions.
Fans remained on the site hoping that the scheduled headline performances would go ahead but at 11pm organisers announced that Massive Attack, Doja Cat and Bad Gyal would not take to the stage due to ‘adverse weather conditions’.
The cancellation was particularly disappointing for fans as Massive Attack had been due to make their long-awaited Primavera Sound debut after pulling out of the festival’s 2022 edition.
Following the announcement, Doja Cat told fans on social media she was ‘devastated’ that she could not perform in Barcelona, but reassured them she would return, promising: “I’ll be back.”
Barcelona-native, Bad Gyal, meanwhile explained to her social media followers: “Hey everyone, the weather has been terrible all day, the stages are completely wrecked, it’s impossible for us to perform. I was really looking forward to ending my tour in my hometown, but it’s not going to be possible, I’m so sorry.”
The festival is set to continue until June 7, with forecasts predicting sunny and more settled conditions for the remainder of the event after Thursday’s storm disruption.
Festival-goers can still look forward to headline performances from The Cure, Gorillaz and The xx over the coming days.
