TWO paddleboarders made a gruesome discovery of a body on a Torrevieja area beach on Monday.

The location is close to the La Mata canal and near Torrevieja’s border with the Guardamar municipality.

THERMAL BLANKET AT SCENE

The surfers alerted authorities at 3.30pm, with the Guardia Civil taking charge of the investigation.

The working theory is that the body came from a boat carrying migrants that ended up being shipwrecked.

Initial indications point to that being likely- based on the clothing worn by the man and the advanced decomposition of the body.

There were no obvious signs of violence.

The body was placed inside a thermal blanket before being removed from the beach.

A DNA sample has been taken to try to identify the man.

Torrevieja’s Policia Local praised the paddleboarders for immediately contacting emergency services and the professionalism of those scrambled to assist at the beach.

There has been an increase of bodies washed ashore on Spain’s eastern coast in recent weeks from migrant boats due to the intensification of eastern winds.

Most journeys are being undertaken from Algeria.
