WORK has begun on a new transport interchange in San Pedro Alcantara, a €1.5 million bus station whose design is abstractly modelled on a giant espeto sardine.
The town hall has started clearing the 8,100-square-metre plot at the former ‘Cielo de San Pedro’, beside the junction of the A-7 motorway and the A-397 Ronda road.
The €1.5 million project is being driven jointly with the Junta and is due for completion in 2027.
The interchange will feature a 150-square-metre passenger building, six bus bays with waiting areas, taxi ranks, pedestrian links and parking.
More than 4,000 square metres of green space will act as a buffer between the hub and the surrounding roads.
San Pedro deputy mayor Javier Garcia said the architecture was ‘inspired in an abstract way by an espeto de sardinas‘, aiming for ‘a modern and iconic image, representative of the Costa del Sol’.
Garcia announced the start of works after a meeting of the local governing board.
The clearance stems from an agreement signed with the regional Consejeria de Fomento (regional development ministry) on February 17, 2025, under which the town hall prepares the plot and the Junta builds, runs and maintains the station.
That work involves demolishing paving, stripping out a concrete slab and asphalt, cleaning the site and transplanting any trees that can be saved, and has a two-month timetable.
Garcia said the basic design had already been submitted by the drafting team, with the final execution project due in July.
Once that is supervised, the contract will go out to tender, and the Junta has earmarked funding for both 2026 and 2027.
“The financing is guaranteed,” he said.

He expects the public tender to be called between late this year and early next, with construction finished before the end of 2027.
He said the station would improve mobility and push San Pedro’s growth northwards, linking up with new developments planned beside the Ronda road.
“We are keeping the commitments we made and taking all the necessary steps so that San Pedro Alcantara can finally have a modern, fully functional transport interchange,” he said.
