THE Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) has unveiled a new adapted fitness centre in Marbella – equipped thanks to the collaboration of the Quirónsalud Foundation and Quirónsalud Marbella Hospital.
The gym, located at the local branch (Avenida del Mar No. 5), is designed to improve the quality of life of people with cancer through supervised physical activity programmes.
The event was attended by the president of the Marbella branch, Santiago Gómez Villares, accompanied by members of the board of directors, as well as the physiotherapist, Alba Espada, who is responsible for designing and supervising the exercise programmes.
Representing Quirónsalud Marbella Hospital was Dr Cristina Quero, a specialist from the Comprehensive Oncology Department.
The new space is equipped with specialist equipment for adapted training, including bars and discs, dumbbells, resistance bands, a weight bench and cage, an elliptical trainer, a rowing machine, exercise mats, kettlebells, a Bosu ball and other equipment designed to improve patients’ strength, mobility and endurance.
The gym is aimed at cancer patients who are part of the association’s physiotherapy unit in Marbella and who have received the go-ahead from their oncologist, as well as an assessment from the physiotherapist.
Alba Espadas will be responsible for drawing up personalised programmes and supervising the correct performance of the exercises, ensuring the safety and effectiveness of the sessions.
At the launch event, the president of the The Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) in Marbella, Santiago Gómez Villares, emphasised that: “The launch of this gym represents a very important step towards continuing to offer comprehensive care to people with cancer. Physical exercise is a key therapeutic tool that improves not only patients’ physical condition but also their emotional wellbeing. Thanks to the collaboration of Quirónsalud, we can strengthen our resources and provide better support to those who need it most”.
For her part, Dr Cristina Quero, an oncology specialist at Quirónsalud Marbella Hospital, emphasised that “scientific evidence shows that physical exercise plays a key role in both the prevention and treatment of cancer. Various studies have shown that regular physical activity can reduce the risk of developing certain cancers by up to 30 per cent, particularly breast and bowel cancer, two of the most widely studied types in this field”.
The specialist also pointed out that “for cancer patients, adapted physical exercise brings significant physical and emotional benefits, helping to improve strength, endurance and functionality, as well as reducing fatigue, anxiety and other side effects associated with treatments.”

In this regard, she emphasised that “incorporating exercise as part of the therapeutic approach helps to improve patients’ quality of life, promotes a more positive perception of their health status and helps them cope with the cancer journey with greater physical and psychological resources”.
Currently, the leading international scientific societies consider adapted physical exercise to be an essential part of comprehensive care for cancer patients.
She added, furthermore, that “initiatives such as this new gym make it possible to provide patients with supervised physical exercise programmes tailored to their needs, turning physical activity into a safe and effective therapeutic tool throughout all stages of the disease”.
Finally, she pointed out that “at Quirónsalud Marbella Hospital, we routinely recommend adapted physical exercise as a complement to cancer treatment, always under the supervision of specialist professionals”.
The Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) also emphasises the importance of adapted and supervised physical exercise during cancer treatment. Numerous studies confirm that physical activity helps to reduce fatigue, preserve muscle mass, improve mood and increase tolerance to treatments, as well as boosting the immune system’s response.
In this regard, the general recommendations are to avoid prolonged rest and to opt for a combination of gentle aerobic exercise, strength training and stretching, always under professional supervision and tailored to each patient.
