A MISSING Norwegian teenager has been confirmed as the person killed in a hit-and-run driver on the A-7 near Mijas, hours after Norway’s World Cup win over Brazil.
The girl, named as Nikoline, was just 17 and had been on holiday in the Costa del Sol since June 19.
She was due to fly home to Norway on the same day she died.
The mother told the Spanish newspaper SUR that Nikoline had gone out with friends to a Marbella nightclub Funky Buddha to celebrate Norway’s win over Brazil in the World Cup last-16.
Between 3am and 4am, a friend went to the bathroom and returned to find Nikoline gone.
Her phone was last traced to Avenida Julio Iglesias, a few metres from the club, at 3.30am, before it went dark and neither her friend nor her family could reach her.
At 5.20am, close to two hours later, she was struck and killed by a lorry at kilometre 1,027 of the A-7, the motorway running through Mijas.
A witness told Spain’s 112 emergency line that the truck driver did not stop and fled the scene.
The incident caused traffic to build up on the A-7, with long queues stretching over three kilometres as the right lane – where the accident took place – was partially closed off. Â
Guardia Civil’s traffic division, the 061 health emergency service, and road maintenance crews confirmed her death at the scene.
She was carrying no identification.
Nikoline’s family had spent the morning searching the area where she had been out and filed a missing-persons report with the Policia Nacional, Spain’s national police, in Fuengirola, before learning hours later that she was the victim of the crash.
Guardia Civil now has an open investigation into how the crash happened and into identifying the driver.
The driver responsible remains unidentified and at large.
