SPAIN’s World Cup triumph has seen several records tumble over the course of the tournament’s 39 days.

La Roja’s victory over Argentina on Sunday marked the first time in history that a country has held both the men’s and women’s World Cup titles simultaneously – with Rodri and his team-mates also reigning European champions.

The 1-0 win was the culmination of a remarkable 38-match unbeaten run dating back to the start of Euro 2024, setting a new record for the longest unbeaten streak by a national team.

Spain also produced a remarkable defensive display, keeping seven clean sheets and conceding just one goal since the tournament began on 11 June.

Basque goalkeeper Unai Simon also etched his name into the record books by setting a new World Cup record for the longest run without conceding a goal.

After Spain’s victory over Austria, Simon had gone 519 minutes without being beaten, surpassing the previous record of 517 minutes set by Italy’s Walter Zenga at the 1990 World Cup.

Belgium eventually ended Spain’s run when they found the net on 10 July. Before then, however, Spain’s defence had kept opponents scoreless for an extraordinary 650 consecutive minutes.

Atletico de Madrid midfielder Alex Baena also made history, becoming the first footballer to win both a European Championship and a World Cup while also claiming an Olympic gold medal.

Spain manager Luis de la Fuente set another milestone, becoming the oldest coach to win the World Cup after celebrating his 65th birthday in June.
