A YOUNG teenager died and several others were injured when a fountain collapsed during early Monday morning celebrations of Spain’s World Cup final victory over Argentina.
Emergency services received calls shortly after 12.30am reporting that a fountain had collapsed on multiple victims in Ciudad Rodrigo in the Castilla y Leon region- close to the border with Portugal.
The victim, a 13-year-old boy, was fatally injured after the structure gave way under the weight of numerous people who had climbed onto it.

Two others were said to have been seriously injured in the incident but the injuries were reportedly not life-threatening.
Several police officers tried to assist the boy and they freed him from the remains of the collapsed fountain.
He died though due to the extent of his injuries.
Ciudad Rodrigo council expressed its sadness and offered condolences for the death of the boy in a Facebook post on Monday.
“What should have been a celebration of Spain’s team in the football World Cup turned into tragedy,” the municipality said, confirming that several others were injured.
“The entire city feels this loss and joins the family and friends of the child in their pain,” it continued.
Spain claimed their first World Cup victory since 2010, sparking widespread celebrations across the country.
Authorities have not yet released further details about the extent of injuries sustained by others in the collapse or the condition of the injured youth.
