Champions of the world: Spain defeat embarrassing Argentina to win World Cup for second time

A VICTORY for football and another FIFA World Cup for Spain.

On a sunny Sunday afternoon in New York, Luis de la Fuente’s brilliant, youthful and energetic side followed up their Euros victory two years ago with a commanding 1-0 win over a pathetic, embarrassing Argentina to become world champions again.

And just like 16 years ago, when Spain defeated the Netherlands to break their World Cup duck, La Roja had to wait until the second half of extra time to discover their hero.

In South Africa it was Andres Iniesta, and in North America it was another Barcelona star in the form of Ferran Torres.

He scored after a magnificent assist from Nico Williams to send Spain wild – including prime minister Pedro Sanchez, who shook hands with US president Donald Trump pre-match.

Spain were heads and shoulders above their bitter, pathetic opponents, who failed to register a single shot until the final minutes of extra time, had a man sent off and threw punches in disgraceful scenes post-match.
