OLIVE Press readers have lavished praise on a pair of Guardia Civil officers who went beyond the call of duty to save a pet dog from the historic wildfire currently leaving a trail of destruction near Madrid.
Video footage shared online shows the brave duo carrying the stricken animal away from the flames in Pelayos de la Presa, a small municipality located less than 60km away from the Spanish capital.
The officers bundled the disorientated dog into the boot of a car before urging the driver to quickly hurry away to safety.
They then ran back towards the raging inferno to continue their rescue efforts.
The selfless pair have been praised as ‘heroes’ online, including by the Olive Press’ dedicated legion of subscribers.
“God bless these brave men”, wrote one user on Facebook.
“Thank you, heroes!” commented an Instagram follower.
Another user added: “Extremely brave in the line of duty and showing so much compassion at the risk of their own lives.”
More than 60,000 residents in the Community of Madrid have been ordered to evacuate their homes or stay inside as firefighters struggle to contain a series of sprawling fire fronts.
The wildfires are already the worst in Madrid’s history and yesterday triggered Spain’s second-ever national emergency – following only last year’s electricity blackout.
