I SUPPOSE it would be churlish not to congratulate Spain for having the best ball-kickers on the planet and, unlike Argentina, managed to remember what it was they were supposed to be kicking.
Those of you who read my last column will know football is definitely not my game.
But I did think it interesting that after many years of being the most corrupt and unsporting sporting organisation, FIFA’s managed to hit new levels of crookedness.
No longer it seems does Johnny the kid, aka FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, need to hide his dodgy dealings.
Red card for a US player who will miss his team’s next crucial match?
Gianni: “Oh hello, Donald, Sir Mr President. You didn’t like the red card? You’d like us to change the rules so Balogun can keep playing? Of course, your peacefulness, I’ll get our team of sleazy lawyers on it immediately!

“One more thing Mr President. Can we have the World Cup in the US every four years? It seems your country and our money machine are a good fit. Don’t worry we’ll ditch the Canucks and the Beaners next time.”
As for England, the ball-ache goes on for another four years at least.
We clearly need it across the pond in Blighty so King Charles needs to persuade the Don to double-cross the Football Kid and let England have a go with the trophy.
I reckon 10 minutes of ‘being the king’ full regalia at Buckingham Palace, a crown and sceptre, and the deal would be golden.
The only other thing I can’t get away from now is the heat and the awful wildfires blazing away.
Once upon a time epic heat and blazes tearing across the countryside was a Spanish thing.
We in England looked on mostly in envy.

But the world truly has gone mad, now even England has its own wildfires. And even in Derbyshire.
One thing I will say in all seriousness is that we need to stop thinking so much about how to stop or slow down climate change and start thinking about better ways to live with it.
I don’t care if we caused it or not.
It’s happening and if you think Spain is ill-equipped to deal with the heat, you should try living in a new-build home in the south of England when it’s 35 degrees outside…
Imagine a well-insulated box, with lots of glass windows to let the sunlight in, and no air conditioning!
