MALAGA is one of the 30 Spanish cities that will receive free sunglasses to safely watch the upcoming eclipse.
This is part of the project A unique sight. Take care of it, that unites the Spanish government with ONCE, the national blindness association.
ONCE has prepared more than 2 million officially approved glasses to distribute next week in all of their kiosks. They are preparing citizens for the eclipse of the century in Spain on August 12.
The government has also chosen 30 cities to distribute 300,000 more glasses, one of them being Malaga. Specifically, they can be picked up at the Interactive Museum of Music (MIMMA) from the start of next week.
Experts have warned about the dangers of staring directly at the sun, since beams ultraviolet and infrared lights that can cause permanent damage.The solution is as simple as using adequate protection.
After the consequences of the 2024 eclipse among the United States population, many of whom described (and Googled) feeling ‘sand in their eyes’.
This sensation is the precursor of a phenomenon called eclipse retinopathy.
The vice president of ONCE, Alberto Duran, has stated that they feel grateful because they can only intervene when the visual impairment has already taken place.
“Taking care of people also includes anticipating when you know that, on occasions such as this astronomical phenomenon, these accidents are going to happen”, he stated.
