Two Spaniards among 13 tourists killed after sightseeing plane crashes over Peru’s famous Nazca Lines

TWO Spanish tourists were among 13 people killed on Saturday after a sightseeing plane crashed over Peru’s world-famous Nazca Lines.

The Cessna Caravan C-208 came down while carrying 11 passengers and two pilots on a scenic flight over the ancient archaeological site, with officials confirming there were no survivors.

According to Peru’s state news agency, the dead included two Spaniards, two Germans and seven Italians.

“Given the severity of the accident, there are no survivors – we have recovered four bodies so far,” said local mayor Jorge Andrade.

The aircraft, operated by local airline Aerodiana, crashed shortly after departing from Pisco airport at around 1pm local time.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

The Nazca Lines, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southern Peru, are one of the country’s biggest tourist attractions.

The enormous ancient geoglyphs, etched into the desert around 1,600 years ago, are best viewed from the air with thousands of visitors taking sightseeing flights every year.

Saturday’s accident is not the first fatal incident involving tourist flights over the Nazca Lines.

Seven people died in a similar crash in 2022, while another sightseeing plane went down in 2010, killing all six people on board.
