ESTEPONA council has announced the immediate overhaul of Plaza Fuerzas Armadas, one of Estepona’s most prominent public squares.
The renovation covers the square itself and the surrounding Fuerzas Armadas and Calle Independencia, in the town centre, home to the Peña Flamenca, a famous flamenco club and performance venue based on the site.
The town hall describes the current paving as worn out and a mismatch of different surfaces laid down over the years.
That will be ripped out and replaced with natural stone across the whole site.
Underground, the water supply and sewage networks will be completely renewed, with new drainage to handle both wastewater and rainwater run-off.
Above ground, the square gains new ornamental fountains, accessibility ramps for people with reduced mobility, and a children’s play area.
The council will also refresh the green spaces and planting, install new scenic lighting around the fountains and gardens, and fit new street furniture.
Extra waterproofing is being added around the Peña Flamenca’s premises and the planters against neighbouring buildings, to stop damp reaching the walls.
Existing parking spaces within the works area will be kept.
The town hall says the design incorporates suggestions put forward by residents and representatives of the area’s homeowners’ associations.
Officials are billing the project as part of the wider ‘Estepona, Garden of the Costa del Sol’ drive.
This is the town’s long-running push to present itself as the garden city of the Costa del Sol, funding parks and public space upgrades across the municipality.
No completion date has been given for the Plaza Fuerzas Armadas work.
Town hall has not put a price tag on this project specifically, but it forms part of a wider, multi-million euro drive to modernise Estepona’s districts and neighbourhoods, funded from the council’s record 2024 budget surplus.
It follows the completion of the Avenida Mirador de Cancelada, a separate €2,951,493 scheme in the Cancelada district that reopened to traffic on July 31.
