SPAIN’S big August holiday getaway ends this weekend with 6.9 million motorists predicted to hit the road home- coupled with localised trips.
The country’s DGT Traffic Authority will start a major operation on Friday to ensure that the journeys pass without any incident.
The DGT says extra Guardia Civil Trafico officers will be on duty from 3pm on Friday through to midnight on Monday to monitor the widespread return.

Roads are expected to get busy in coastal tourist areas and major urban centres, coupled with more localised journeys that are typical of a summer weekend.
A continuous influx of foreign-registered cars are also expected at border crossings returning to European countries.
To improve traffic flows on key routes, reversible and additional lanes will be pressed into action via signs, beacons, and cones at peak travel hours, along with suggestions of alternative routes.
Road works will be paused along with restrictions on lorries on some sections depending on the date and time.
The DGT forecasts that from Friday afternoon(especially between 4pm and 10pm), there will be high volumes of traffic that will lead to delays.
Peak times on Saturday, will be people leaving large urban centres between 9am and 1pm on short weekend getaways.
As for Sunday, roads to the coast and beaches are expected to busy in the morning, with return traffic building up between 4pm and 11pm, including people returning from their August breaks.
The DGT believes that traffic levels will be more even across Monday without any high peaks, as many return trips would have been made across the weekend.
It warns that traffic that produce stress, aggressiveness, fatigue, tiredness and even a feeling of having ‘wasted time’.
The authority has appealed to motorists not to try to make up for lost time by speeding or making reckless overtaking manoeuvres.
