A THREE-YEAR-OLD girl has tragically drowned in the swimming pool of a holiday home in the Canary Islands.

The child was on holiday with her family when she fell into the pool at a tourist apartment in Tinajo, Lanzarote, around 6pm on Wednesday.

The girl, who was an Asian national and reportedly could not swim, had arrived on the island with her parents just two days earlier.

Emergency services rushed to the property after the alarm was raised, with two local police officers among the first to arrive.

The agents found her in cardiac arrest and tried reviving her before an ambulance from the Canary Islands Emergency Service arrived.

Paramedics took over and managed to get her heart beating again, but she tragically died while being taken to hospital, local authorities said.

The Guardia Civil has now launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drowning.

The tragedy is the latest in a series of fatal drownings involving children in Lanzarote this year.

According to local reports, three other children have died after drowning in the sea or swimming pools on the island in recent months.
