MOST of us are lucky enough to never experience racism, and so it can sometimes feel like the age-old problem has died away – or worse, it’s not our problem.
But sadly, listening to those on the receiving end, this is anything but the case.
Racism is on the rise globally and has been for a few years now, seeping into and infecting every pore of Spanish society.
Whether it’s spread by hateful rhetoric from Vox-affiliated supporters in Spain, the odious Alianca Catalana, in Catalunya, or Tommy Robinson, wherever he can get a soapbox, right-thinking people have to stand up against it.
Often these figures use debate on issues such as immigration to spread their poison. And wherever they go, spreading their foul mouthed stench, they enable sickening out and out racists like Diego Rojo of the Torres Bermejas flamenco club (see front page of our latest print edition).
As we have laid out in our feature on Spain’s long-term immigration forecasts (see page 7), the country is going to be welcoming more and more foreigners in the coming years.
Which is why it’s so important to lay down a marker against the racists and the bigots – Tommy Robinson included (see pages 7/8).
This is why we decided to name Rojo for the despicable racist he is, rather than grant him anonymity as is customary within Spanish news coverage.
He deserves to be exposed for what he is and here at The Olive Press we are proud to name and shame him.
After all, let’s not forget that 90% of people who pick up and read this paper are also immigrants in Spain, one way or another.
